Task management

A free task management app built for finishing the work

Foci is a free task management app for individuals who want to plan work and then focus on it. It combines projects, subtasks, due dates, priorities, recurring tasks, five task views (Cards, Buckets, List, Calendar, Smart Plan), and an optional Pomodoro/Flowtime timer with ambient sound. No account is required to start.

No signup required to start. Optional free account syncs tasks and streaks across devices.

What Foci does for task management

Foci covers the task-management loop: capture, organize, plan, execute, and review. The difference is that execution is built in — you do not need a separate timer, ambient-sound app, or time tracker.

Capture without friction

Quick Add creates a task in the current project. Add projects, subtasks, due dates, priorities, notes, questions, waiting items, and someday/maybe ideas without leaving the task list.

Plan with five views

Use Cards for project cards, Buckets for a kanban board, List for a dense checklist, Calendar for deadlines, and Smart Plan for an algorithmic day-by-day schedule.

Execute the next task

Pick Today's One Thing, open Focus, and run an optional Pomodoro, Flowtime, 52/17, or custom session. Per-task time and session history update automatically.

Handle recurring work

Set tasks to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. Habit-style tasks reset in place; other recurring tasks spawn the next occurrence with an advanced due date.

Import, export, and sync

Import from Google Tasks, Todoist, Asana, Notion, or any CSV, preview new vs existing projects, and export JSON or CSV. Guest data stays local; a free account syncs across devices.

Track progress

See a done tally for today, week, and month, finished-work sections per project, streak history, and product stats for sessions, completions, and project focus time.

Five ways to see the same tasks

The view changes with the job. Capture in List, plan in Calendar or Smart Plan, reorder in Cards, and move work across stages in Buckets.

CardsProject cards with drag-to-reorder tasks, done sections, and a slide-over task detail drawer.
BucketsKanban columns per project with drag-and-drop lanes for overdue, dated, waiting, undated, and someday work.
ListA dense open/done list with sections for dated, no-date, and someday tasks.
CalendarA month overview of due dates; click a day to set a task's due date.
Smart PlanA capacity-aware schedule that spreads overdue work, splits multi-session tasks, and explains each placement.

How Foci compares for task management

Pick the tool that matches the job. Todoist and TickTick are mature task managers; Foci is the free option that puts focused execution in the same window.

When Foci is the right task manager

Choose Foci if you…

  • want task management and focused execution in one browser tab
  • want projects, subtasks, due dates, recurring tasks, and multiple views for free
  • want to start without an account and sync later only if needed
  • want an installable, offline-capable PWA
  • want a timer, time tracking, and ambient sound without another subscription

Another tool may fit better if you…

  • need heavy team project management, workload planning, or admin controls
  • rely on advanced GTD labels, filters, and saved searches
  • need native iOS/Android apps with deep OS integrations
  • need a large integration marketplace or enterprise compliance features

How we evaluate task managers

We judge task managers on the work they support, not the length of their feature list: capture speed, project and subtask structure, due-date and recurring-task handling, planning views, execution support, offline/PWA behavior, import and export, privacy, price, and platform coverage. We note where competing apps are stronger, and we test the claims we publish. Foci is our own product; see About Foci for ownership and contact details.

Task management FAQ

Is Foci a task management app?

Yes. Foci is a free task management app with projects, subtasks, due dates, priorities, recurring tasks, and five views: Cards, Buckets, List, Calendar, and Smart Plan. It also includes an optional focus timer and ambient sound, so planning and doing the work happen in one tab.

Is Foci free?

Yes. Foci's core task management and focus features are free, with no credit card required. An optional free account adds cloud sync across devices.

Do I need an account to use Foci?

No. Open usefoci.com/app and start using Foci without signing in; guest data stays in your browser. Create a free account only if you want tasks, projects, settings, and streaks synced across devices.

What task views does Foci have?

Foci has five views: Cards (project cards with drag-to-reorder tasks), Buckets (a kanban board with overdue, dated, waiting, undated, and someday lanes), List, Calendar, and Smart Plan. Each has a shareable URL: /app/cards, /app/buckets, /app/list, /app/calendar, and /app/plan.

Does Foci support recurring tasks and subtasks?

Yes. Tasks can repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly, with an option to reset the same task for habits instead of cloning it. Subtasks can have their own due dates and optional quantity targets such as 10 of 50 pushups.

Can I import tasks from Todoist, Google Tasks, Asana, or Notion?

Foci imports tasks from Google Tasks (JSON via Google Takeout), Todoist (CSV), Asana (CSV), Notion (CSV), and any CSV with a title column. Open the import screen from the onboarding card, ⋯ → Import tasks, Settings → Data, or Projects → Import; Foci previews every task, labels new vs existing projects, and lets you pick a destination before confirming. No account required. Guide: usefoci.com/blog/import-tasks-into-foci.

Does Foci work offline?

Yes. Foci is an installable Progressive Web App. Tasks, settings, and progress can stay available offline in your browser, and the built-in ambient sounds work offline too. Install steps: usefoci.com/install.

Is Foci good for teams?

Foci supports project sharing with viewer and editor roles, but it is built primarily for individual focus and task execution. Teams that need advanced project management, workload planning, or deep integrations may be better served by Todoist, Asana, or Notion. Compare at usefoci.com/vs.

How is Foci different from Todoist or TickTick?

Todoist is stronger as a standalone GTD-style task manager. TickTick is calendar-heavy with a broader feature suite. Foci is free and combines task management with an optional focus timer, per-task time tracking, Smart Plan, and built-in ambient sound. Side-by-side: usefoci.com/vs/todoist and usefoci.com/vs/ticktick.

What is Smart Plan?

Smart Plan is Foci's algorithmic scheduler at usefoci.com/app/plan. It weighs due dates, priority, effort estimates, and daily session capacity to spread overdue work across days, split multi-session tasks, explain each placement, and recommend Today's One Thing. No AI service is required.

Can Foci help with ADHD focus?

Foci provides external structure that some people find useful: small subtasks, a single Today's One Thing, short timed sessions, ambient sound, and streak feedback. It is a productivity tool, not a medical treatment. Guide: usefoci.com/blog/adhd-focus-strategies.

Plan the day. Finish the work.

Foci (usefoci.com) is a free task manager and focus app: projects, Smart Plan, daily goals, streak stats, ambient music, and an optional Pomodoro-style focus timer in one calm browser window.
